The Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon is a world research and innovation leader in the areas of speech processing, language processing, machine translation, information retrieval, machine learning, and computational biology. The MLT program is a two-year Master's program offered by the LTI that consists of courses (including lectures, labs, and seminars), directed research, and project work. Most MLT students are affiliated with an advisor's research project, in which they gain valuable hands-on experience with advanced research and state-of-the-art software.

The MLT program is research-oriented. Many of our students publish papers at top international conferences in their field, and many of our graduates continue on to PhD programs at CMU and other top universities. When MLT graduates are admitted to the LTI PhD program, most of their MLT courses and hands-on work are credited towards the PhD.

The MLT program is also appropriate for students who want to gain experience for industry jobs in increasingly important and rapidly growing fields. MLT graduates are highly recruited by industry and government agencies.

Students complete the MLT degree in two years (24 months), with two summers of required research. Generally, students should expect to graduate in August of their second year.
