Carnegie Mellon University’s Graduate Certificate in Machine Learning & Data Science Foundations program is the second-best artificial intelligence graduate certificate in the nation, according to a new ranking from MastersInAI.org.

The online graduate certificate program is led by Language Technologies Institute faculty member and Kavčić-Moura Professor Carolyn Rosé. Launched in 2024, the program was designed to “teach technically-savvy professionals how to leverage AI and machine learning technology for harnessing the power of large scale data systems.” Other LTI faculty instructors include Professor Carlos Busso, Research Professor Kemal Oflazer, and Assistant Research Professor David Mortensen.

“The aim of the certificates is to bring the bleeding edge of the rapidly changing AI landscape to a worldwide student body, to build capacity so that individuals can move into a competitive positioning in their employability,” Rosé said.

The MastersInAI.org rankings highlighted the CMU program’s “prestige factor,” adding that “Carnegie Mellon is a massive name in artificial intelligence.”

MastersInAI.org, operated by Washington D.C.-based education media company Degree Prospects, uses a panel of researchers and writers with technical backgrounds to construct its program rankings, including computer science degree-holders and university professors. The graduate certificate rankings listed the 15 best such programs in the country according to the expert panelists.

Rosé emphasized that it is not just the curriculum that make the Machine Learning & Data Science Foundations program special, but also the people.

“We're not just instructors, we're mentors who deeply care about the experience we are offering our students,” she said. “This is not just a collection of classes, it's a community of students learning together and inspiring each other to greater levels of achievement on their respective paths.”
